Ethics

Mission of the State Bar of California

The mission of the State Bar of California is to protect the public and includes the primary functions of licensing, regulation and discipline of attorneys; the advancement of the ethical and competent practice of law; and support of efforts for greater access to and inclusion in the legal system.

The State Bar offers many resources, including ethics opinions, education programs, and research tools that can aid attorneys while practicing law. These resources are intended to encourage ethical practice and prevent and discourage attorney misconduct.

The Ethics Hotline is a confidential research service for attorneys seeking guidance on their professional responsibilities. An online Ethics Hotline Research Assistance Request Form is also available.

Mission of the California Department of Real Estate

The mission of the Department of Real Estate (DRE) is to safeguard and promote the public interests in real estate matters through licensure, regulation education and enforcement.

Although the DRE exists to serve the real property market and protect the transactions occurring in the real estate field, the resources it offers to licensees is limited. Most resources for licensees are available through trade associations like the National Association of Realtors, California Association of Realtors, and other local associations. Realtors are required to comply with the Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice
